PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
All I can say is thank goodness that the school holidays are coming up so that all of our students and staff (and yourselves as well) can have an opportunity to recharge and reflect upon another very busy and exciting Term 3 at Geraldton PS. Term 4 is shaping up to be filled with many teaching and learning events and the Term 4 Planner attached will reflect this.
Save the dates for Term 4 – Student Led Conferences commencing Wednesday 17 October (Early close on that day), Colour Fun Run October 19, End of Year Presentation Concert – November 30 and Year 6 Graduation Assembly – 10 December.
The second Colour Fun Run fundraising event by the P & C Association which will be held on Friday October 19th (the end of Week 2, Term 4). Information about sponsorship processes and prizes are included in this newsletter including an online link to simplify the process for parent/carers.
Don’t throw away those old white clothes, you will need them for the day and also goggles or sunglasses. The fire engine is booked! Big kids (adults) can also join in. The P & C Association will be calling for willing volunteers to help prepare for and help on the day as well so keep a look out for this.

Speaking of P & C, a huge congratulations to the GPS 2019 Year 6 Camp Fundraising group, led by Leanne Mitchell and supported by the P & C and many parents and staff, who coordinated a highly successful Bogan Bingo event on the 31 August at the QE11 Centre. Much fun and merriment was had by all with terrific costumes and even better air guitar and dancing prowess showcased. Many thanks to Anne Williams for compering the evening. Anne is one of our SIMS (School of Instrumental Music) teachers who comes to Geraldton PS.
A note from Leanne Mitchell – “Thanks to everyone for their support - it turned out to be an amazing night!!! Huge thanks to Rachel McRae for chasing up prizes/donations and her help throughout the whole process which followed through till the end of the night, Amy Blyth, Manu Tiaki Brown, Jennifer Aldrick, Rachell Wilson, Rachel Rutter, Katrina Perrett, Angela Barbour, Rachel Hill and Linda Puglia for their help on the night. To everyone who attended meetings, helped with the set up and pack down, and attending on the night - it shows true community school spirit.”
The Year 6 Camp date is 27 May to 31 May 2019.

The Interschool Carnival would have been completed by the time this newsletter is published. At this stage only 2 points separates first and second ranking with Geraldton PS marginally behind in second place. I know our students, under the guidance of Mr Bradley, our HPE teacher will endeavour to do their best at the carnival.
Congratulations to our Interschool Cross Country competitors who did their best on the day, achieving their personal bests. Thanks to Shane Day for the great photographs on the day.

Book Week (Back in 1878) Dress Up Day is on next Thursday 20 September (second last day of the term). We have a number of activities planned for the day commencing with a Parade starting at 9.00am at the Undercover Area. All parent/carers are most welcome to attend (either in 1800s dress up or in 2018 clothing). I hear a special judge may be appearing to acknowledge student (and parent/carer) endeavours in the dress up department.

After that, students will have an opportunity to participate in croquet at the Geraldton Croquet Club, have class photos taken old style in sepia and black and white, participate in a short role play class lesson demonstrations 1878 era style with Mrs Leanne MacLeod and Mr Ian Davidson as our authentic teachers from then and learn and play old style games in PE with Mr Bradley.
We have knuckle bones, marbles, skipping ropes, quoits and hoops ready for the day.
We will be setting up a couple of classrooms to replicate school in 1878 (as best we can) and setting up a display of GPS memorabilia for everyone’s interest.
We will also have our lunch all together on the oval in class groups and if parent/carers and family members have time available, please come along and join us.
The ABC Midwest and Wheatbelt will also be filming segments from the day.
No technology (iPads, computers, interactive whiteboards) will be used that day in the teaching and learning programs to reflect a snapshot of the day. An exception will be made for taking photographs and use of a drone.
We have an ambitious idea to spell out GPS 140 on the oval with our staff and students and any parent/carers and family members who at school after lunch. Thank you to James MacPherson who has kindly agreed to do a drone shot of this.
The focus of the day is to reflect on the treasures of 1878 compared to 2018.
We would love you to support us. On our GPS Facebook page we have placed many, many ideas for dress ups which seem reasonably easy to do.
Costumes are available to purchase from Let’s Party who have specially brought in costumes from the 1800s and In Character Costume Hire (link below) who have many costumes for adults and children for hire.

On Monday 27 August, we bade farewell to Mrs Jacqui Archdale who retired at the end of Term 2 this year after 45 years of teaching, much of it at Geraldton PS. Jacqui was farewelled in style by the school staff, former colleagues, parents, former students and current students. The GPS Facebook page has an in-depth description of the event and many photos from the event and we also acknowledged Jacqui’s contribution to public education via news articles in the Geraldton Guardian and the Department of Education’s Facebook page.

P and C ASSOCIATION CANTEEN SURVEY
We want your opinions! From the Geraldton Primary School P & C Association Canteen Sub-Committee
The Geraldton Primary School P & C Association are currently conducting an extensive assessment on the school canteen in collaboration with the Canteen Sub-Committee.
We want to make our decisions regarding our school canteen based on information and feedback from our school community, including parent/carers, staff and Year 3 to 6 students.
This survey will also help us to get a picture of what has been happening in the school canteen to better understand what is helping or hindering the viability of the canteen.
We would like to find out what you think! All answers will remain confidential.
It is estimated that the survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
The deadline for the survey completion is Friday 12 October 2018 (the end of the first week of Term 4).

We understand that sometimes this information is confidential and we will keep it so.
In the next newsletter we will outline some of the class structure options we will be looking at as connected to the numbers of students in each year level.
Wishing you all a safe and refreshing holidays and we look forward to seeing our students and yourselves back at school on Tuesday 9 October. Monday October 8 is a School Development Day.

ROOM 14
Year 1, Room 14 – Teacher Mrs Jefcoate
We have all had a busy time doing lots of fun things this term.
For Art, we made clay pots ready for Father’s Day. We also made God’s eyes and other things made from plastic to display during the Exhibition Night. We loved our display about the 3Rs and learning about recycling and reusing plastic bottles.
A real life author and illustrator, by the name of Kylie Howarth came to visit the school. She read one of her books called ‘Chip’ and then showed the students how she drew the character of Chip. Look at a small sample of what the children drew. They are on their way to being an illustrator for sure!
Our Faction Carnival was an exciting time for all the students. This a sample of their recount writing about the day.
It’s wonderful when children share their knowledge and are given the opportunity to teach other students. Last week the Year 2 class from Mr Davidson’s class came to teach our class how to play Scratch Junior. Scratch Junior is an early introduction to coding. The students thoroughly enjoyed working with the older kids. I was most impressed on how the older students were giving instructions to the younger students. Thank you to the Year 2s.

COLOUR FUN RUN
Geraldton Primary School P&C will be using the Go Fundraise platform as part of the Australian Fundraising’s Color Run Fundraiser for our Colour Fun Run on Friday October 19 2018.
Basically to fundraise for this event, parent/carers need to register by creating an online fundraising page.
Go to the link below to register your child for the event. I have had a go at this and found it very easy to do.
http://www.myprofilepage.com.au/
The registration process asks for some parent/carer details, name of your child and creates a fundraising page to which donations may be made.
It shows the prizes linked to amounts raised.
We have made the decision to use the online fundraising facility to make it easier for parents.
This fundraiser is now an annual event for the P & C Association and was highly successful last year as the students (and staff and parents) got to have heaps of fun, exercise, raise funds for school equipment and get wet and covered in colour at the same time.
A separate note will also be sent home about this next week with more details.

Geraldton Primary’s Year 4 and 5 Wildlife Warriors
Written by Paige Maeder, Term 2 Class Teacher
During term 2 2018, the students of Room 4, learnt about endangered animals and how they could help them. The learning sequence focused on biological science where students learnt about habitats, life cycles and food chains of different animals. They also learnt about the negative effect humans are having on some animals habitats and how this is leading to animals becoming severely endangered. Along the way students learnt about the effect of palm oil (and how many everyday products contain it) has on the Orangutans, wrote a informative text about the Orangutans, created a simple financial plan and advertisements for their fundraising and even took turns running a Pop-up Shop to prepare for running their own stalls.
Students also worked in groups to research a specific endangered animal and built a website to display their skills and research. The students were so moved by what they had learnt, that they felt they needed to help. So with some guidance students drew up fundraising proposals where they worked in groups to decide how they were going to fundraise for The World Wildlife Fund. The proposals were heard by Mrs. Katie Taylor who encouraged the students to work together and approved each group’s ideas. Over those 2 weeks when students made their bookmarks and lucky dip jars, I was witness to a great amount of teamwork, where students worked together for a common cause they believe in.
At last during the last week of Term 2, it was time for the students to set up their stalls and start fundraising. Immediately as the school was released from the eating area at lunch, Room 4’s store holders were inundated with their peers wanting to buy either a bookmark or lucky dip jar (which were sold from $1-$2.50) and were eager to share their knowledge about their respective endangered animal. Every stall sold out of their products and made a healthy profit (donations included). All together the whole class raised $310.00, which has been donated to the WWF, in support of endangered animals. When asked to share their thoughts about the fundraising effort students explained that they felt, “happy, surprised, proud and grateful” at how much money they had been able to raise by working together. Students also expressed that they felt “satisfied because the money we raised is going to help endangered animals such as the Panda, Blue Whale, Green Sea Turtle, Bilby, Dugong, Snow Leopards and Hawksbill Turtle”.
Running this fundraising event allowed me to watch my class grow into caring, enthusiastic, and active community members who are able to band together for great community and environmental causes. These students are the leaders of the future and have learnt of the importance of community, teamwork, knowledge and sustainability- all qualities needed for a world that is constantly evolving.
